Russian Avant garde Art Exhibition

2025-01-23 10:05:55 Art weekly

Editor's note: Avant garde art originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a historical concept that does not refer to a single school of painting or artist. In art history, different art schools have been regarded as avant-garde art at different times. For example, in the late 19th century, Impressionism, which was relatively conservative compared to the academic school, was called the avant-garde; Between 1908 and 1914, Cubist artists worked hard to reduce the descriptive and expressive elements of their works, striving to organize a geometric oriented visual structure, and they also became avant-garde; Around 1925, surrealism replaced cubism and once again became the new avant-garde. Representative figures include Duchamp, Picasso, Dali, and others. Avant garde art often has rebelliousness and innovation, challenging traditional artistic norms and pursuing innovation, attempting to apply artistic expressions or concepts that have not been used before, or making significant changes and breakthroughs in specific technologies and media, encouraging artists to freely experiment and innovate. Pioneer art reflects the artist's response and reflection on modern social, cultural, political, and economic phenomena. Its emergence often drives innovation and development in art forms, providing valuable experience and inspiration for later art schools and artists, and having a positive impact on social change.
In this issue, we will learn about avant-garde art in Russia through the works of four art masters: Mark Chagall, Pavel Filonov, Casimir Malevich, and Vasily Kandinsky.
The "Dawn of the Century - Avant garde Art Exhibition from the Russian National Museum Collection", which will kick off at the end of 2024, showcases the classic works of four avant-garde art masters: Marc Chagall, Pavel Filonov, Casimir Malevich, and Vasily Kandinsky. 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, and is also the year of cultural exchange between China and Russia. The exhibition is jointly presented by Chengdu Art Museum and the National Museum of Russia, featuring 86 works by avant-garde masters. Visitors can also experience and understand abstract painting through rich knowledge expansion and interactive art installations, personally appreciate the treasures of Russian avant-garde art, and look back on that era full of change and innovation.
Abstract masterpieces,
Bringing you a different kind of Russian art
When it comes to Russian art, the most familiar to the public may be the Russian touring painting school, which has a realistic style and expresses real life. However, in the early 20th century, there was still a group of talented painters who were brave enough to innovate. They promoted the emergence of new trends and actively tried different forms of creation, hoping to bring new culture and life to the country through the power of art, leading art towards another avant-garde path.
The four avant-garde artists exhibited this time all come from Russia, and this vast land has become their lifelong source of inspiration. Although they share the same birthplace, their different life experiences and choices have resulted in their distinct artistic styles, with vastly different concepts and techniques. Mark Chagall reshapes reality with romantic and lyrical imagination; Pavel Filonov portrays the internal structure and process of things in flat paintings; Casimir Malevich and Vasily Kandinsky respectively founded geometric abstraction and lyrical abstraction... They brought unprecedented innovation and change to the art world with their talents and passion. The radiation influence of avant-garde on modern design has provided a foothold for "art" and "aesthetics" in people's daily lives.
A rare masterpiece of domestic debut
This exhibition not only features 9 works that have made their debut in China and Chengdu, but also many "niche masterpieces" by the four masters, presenting their lesser known side beyond their iconic artistic styles.
Chagall's pen and ink group paintings recorded the hometown of Vitebsk, which was shrouded in the shadow of war; Kandinsky's two "constitutive" paper works showcase his painting practice in the early stage of lyrical abstraction; Princess, knight, castle, bright colors, and childlike storylines, along with four rare glass paintings, make one exclaim that the abstract master Kandinsky had such a childlike and romantic inner world
Using beauty as a medium and exhibitions to create a beautiful and shared atmosphere
The Russian National Museum, established in 1895, has the world's richest collection of national art, with over 440000 pieces, of which avant-garde art occupies an important position. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, the Russian avant-garde exhibition held in Chengdu is not only a wonderful display of various aspects of Russian art, but also a unique opportunity for Chinese audiences to personally experience the treasures of Russian avant-garde art.
Bringing different international perspectives and a feast of world classic art to Chengdu audiences has been the persistent mission of Chengdu Art Museum since its establishment three years ago. From Kollwitz and Lichtenstein to Morandi, the 400 Years of Western Art Exhibition, to today's avant-garde art exhibition in Russia, as well as the retrospective exhibition of French photography master Marc Loubet that opened a few days ago. In this 2025 New Year exhibition season, Chengdu Art Museum continues to respond to the aesthetic expectations of the audience and the trend of international cultural exchange with two international art exhibitions, using exhibitions to create a beautiful and shared atmosphere, promoting the exchange and mutual learning of different countries' civilizations and people to people communication.
Today, when we face these masterpieces, we can still feel their passion for pursuing purity and ideals, which inspires us to bravely move forward. The cold winter, the dawn of the century, this aesthetic feast intertwined with sensibility and rationality, will not be separated from you!
