From September 25th to October 20th, the "City·Garden - 2025 National Higher Art Colleges and Universities Flower and Bird Painting Exhibition of Teachers and Students", jointly sponsored by Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, and Shanghai Artists Association, organized by the Chinese Painting Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, guided by Shanghai University, with academic support from the Chinese Painting Art Committee of China Artists Association, and co-organized by Baoshan District Artists Association of Shanghai and Cheng Shifa Art Museum, was held at the Shanghai Art Museum.
This exhibition brings together the creative works of teachers and students from 23 participating institutions across the country, and also invites 10 artists to present their specially commissioned works, presenting a diverse range of creative and teaching achievements in flower-and-bird painting within the context of urban life.
It is noteworthy that the exhibition has specially set up a special exhibition area for the "New Shanghai School Flower and Bird Painting Art Exhibition" funded by the Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation, which is exhibited simultaneously with the main exhibition. This special exhibition area features 10 masterpieces from the collection of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, including works by eight old Shanghai School artists such as Wang Geyi, Jiang Hanting, and Zhang Dazhuang, providing a bridge for the audience to experience the profound heritage of Shanghai School flower and bird painting.
As the chief curator of this exhibition, Zeng Chenggang, the dean of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, expressed his expectation that every visitor could find their own "urban oasis" in these works, feel the harmonious coexistence of art and nature, tradition and modernity in the contemporary transformation of flower-and-bird painting, and appreciate the unique charm and important mission of higher art education in cultural inheritance and innovation.
According to reports, this exhibition closely explores the connection between "city" and "garden", breaking the boundaries between traditional flower-and-bird painting and modern urban life by focusing on the unique perspective of "garden in the city". It provides a vivid sample for exploring the inheritance path and innovation direction of flower-and-bird painting in the contemporary era. At the same time, the exhibition also builds a communication platform for the teaching and creation of flower-and-bird painting in higher art institutions across the country, helping to promote the dissemination and development of Chinese flower-and-bird painting art in the new era, allowing more people to experience the unique charm of traditional ink and wash in the contemporary urban context.
